Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. And here I am amid your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For whom by himself can govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:7-9
Solomon was given the opportunity by God in a vision to have anything he wanted, and the king chose wisdom. Solomon was overwhelmed with the responsibility of being the king of Israel and he felt like a little child who does not know his way around a new school. Solomon missed the mentoring of his father David and he prayed for an understanding heart or wisdom to govern the people who were prone to wander from God’s direction. Solomon showed humility and understood that he could not govern the people in his own strength but need the wisdom of the Lord. Are seeking God’s wisdom today or are you trying to figure things out on your own? The first step is to follow Solomon’s path of realizing you are a little child and need the Lord’s salvation and wisdom in your life. Ask the Lord to take away the blinders of pride and selfish ambition and fall into His arms as a little child cuddling with his mother and father. Jesus was clear in His sermon that if we seek first the kingdom of God, everything will be added to us including the Lord’s provision of wisdom and direction. May God bless us as we learn to humble ourselves before His presence in prayer and are filled with His understanding heart to share His light with those in darkness. AMEN.
